History of the

First Baptist Church

of

Haleyville, Alabama

                      Founded in 1901                      

 

The First Baptist Church of Haleyville, Alabama has been a beacon of light in this community for over 100 years.  It has reached far and wide touching many individuals who have answered the call to go forth proclaiming God's word by spreading His message to others.  Our church has a wonderful history.  We must now strive to plan for a wonderful future.

 

 
      FIRST MEETING PLACE

Prior to 1890, probably about 1885, preaching was held, for only a few months, in an old storehouse owned by Bud Roden.  This building was on a lot just east of Lyon's Department Store.  Today City Pharmacy is located there.  Billie Fortenberry draws this sketch from descriptions she found in old newspapers and books.  This building was also used as the first little school, which met only for three (3) months in the summer.  The size of this structure was 18' x 25'
